
William Harald-Wong is an urban identity designer. He consults on the shaping of distinctive Asian identities and physical living environments for new Asian cities, urban renewal and integrated mixed-use developments, destination resorts as well as for retail spaces.
In May 2010, he was awarded the 2009-2010 International Design Achievement Award in Beijing by the Construction Industry Sub-council of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade and Qinghua University Fine Arts College.
William is the Founder and current Chairman of The Design Alliance, a collaborative network of design consultancies in 11 Asian countries to help organisations communicate across Asia. He is a member of the Regional Expert Panel of the Hong Kong Design Centre for the Design for Asia Awards.
From 2001-03, William served as Vice-President of Icograda (International Council of Graphic Design Associations), the world body for visual communications. He is currently Icograda’s INDIGO Ambassador. INDIGO connects designers worldwide in an effort to explore the understanding of indigenous design.
William is a keen photographer who, in his spare time, documents aspects of Southeast Asian culture. Projects include ‘Tokoh-tokoh Seniman Werdha’, a two-year search for the ‘missing’ legendary Balinese dancers and musicians from the early 1900s, and shamanistic healing rituals in Malaysia.
His first solo exhibition, ‘Naga, the Serpent Spirit of Southeast Asia’, a photo-documentary project covering five Asian countries, was held in South Korea. Group exhibitions include ‘Six Asian Designers’ (Osaka) and ‘33 Designers from around the World’ (Osaka and Tokyo).
