From start ups to turnarounds, David is one of Asia’s most established agency leaders with a strong track record in building business, teams, skills, brands and driving creativity with wins in every creative show at every level since 1999.
David came to Asia in 1994 from London to join Bates in Hong Kong. He was then hired by Ogilvy & Mather in 1997 principally to run their signature Guinness business. In the time since, he founded creative boutique, RedCard and after selling it to Ogilvy in 2006, he went on to hold several key senior roles at Ogilvy, including the Presidency of Ogilvy & Mather Advertising and Ogilvy & Mather ASEAN.
In 2012, he established BatesCHI & Partners which by 2015 had become one of the fastest growing Advertising Agencies inside WPP Asia. At the start of 2016, David was invited back to Ogilvy & Mather as Asia CMO, to lead the resurgence of the Ogilvy brand in Asia Pacific and was appointed to the Malaysia leadership role in January 2017 ultimately becoming Head of Country for WPP.
David stepped down from Ogilvy and WPP after 21 years, on August 21st 2018 in order to pursue a new venture involving scalable content and influencer marketing, backed by several data and marketplace investors. He is currently Group Director of Branding at GA Group – one of the world’s largest independent design companies.
David is a Non Executive Director of several companies in the fields of design and data. He is also a visiting lecturer at Singapore Management University and an alumni of INSEAD. He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and of the Royal Society of the Arts and he has been a member of D&AD since 2003. In his spare time, he is heavily involved in multiple charities (Tuloy and Salvation Army) and good causes such as the Singapore Heritage Society. His passions include cycling, motorcycling, camping/hiking, Landrovers and VW’s - Campervans, Karmans and Beetles.
